Bill Gates' mother, Mary Gates, student at University of Washington in the fifties was one of the more prominent persons of that time. So when Bill Gates offered to cough up a chunk of money to help financing a new building with a large computer lab, the idea of naming the place "Mary Gates Hall" didn't seem that far fetched... In the MGH general access computer lab are about 150 PCs, 90 MACs, scanners, CD-ROM burners, etc. worth about $650000. Pretty impressive. Not surprisingly the PCs run Windows... |

Suzzallo Library -- one of the many libraries on UW Campus. Unfortunately Suzzallo is presently surrounded by fences and construction trailers. It's being renovated and some structure is added to provide support in the event of an earthquake. The construction is supposed to continue until Summer of 2002. The square in front of Suzzallo is called Red Square. The reason behind this politically sensitive name is rather obvious. According to Lonely Planet's guide book on the Pacific Northwest, Red Square has an official name. I've never heard anyone using it but it is supposed to be "Central Plaza". |
